Malaysia Is Finished? What If Everyone Is Wrong! — Refreshed Edition

Refreshed edition · English · 5 minutes

This is the English version. A French version is available below.

Is Malaysia’s story really one of decline—or are we missing the bigger picture? This refreshed FindingOut film looks beyond the headlines at the country’s places, people, cultures and economic possibilities.

Why I refreshed this video

This is a refreshed and updated edition of my earlier video, What If Everyone Is Wrong About Malaysia? I revisited it to bring the information up to date and present the story in a shorter, more focused film, with revised narration and new visuals.

The central invitation remains the same: look a little deeper before deciding what Malaysia is—or what it could become. If you watched the original, this edition offers a fresh way to explore that story. If you are new to FindingOut, it is a quick introduction.

A country worth seeing

Malaysia’s skyline is only the beginning. This chapter moves from the towers of Kuala Lumpur to places such as George Town, Kuching and Batu Caves, bringing modern development and living heritage into the same story. Each setting offers a different way of seeing the country: through its architecture, streets, traditions and the people who use these spaces.

For viewers in Malaysia and those discovering it from elsewhere, the invitation is to look beyond a single image. The country’s appeal lies in the variety—and in the way old and new exist alongside each other.

People, food and connections

Much of Malaysia’s character comes through in everyday encounters: gathering for a meal, sharing a celebration or watching a familiar tradition come to life. The film brings together scenes of communal iftar, Hari Raya gatherings, Chinese New Year lion dancing and cultural performances from Sabah and Sarawak. Food adds another thread, from satay to teh tarik and the bustle of a market.

These moments offer a more personal introduction to the country than a skyline alone. They invite viewers to notice the different communities, tastes and customs that contribute to Malaysian life—and the occasions that bring people together.

Follow the money

Beyond the scenery, the film turns to the businesses and infrastructure that help shape Malaysia’s economy. Manufacturing, semiconductor production, data centres, energy and ports feature in this part of the story, showing a different side of the country from its food and holiday destinations.

This is also one reason for refreshing the earlier video: economic information needs to be revisited as new figures become available. The updated film points viewers towards its sources in the YouTube description. It is worth keeping the distinctions clear, too: approved investment is not the same as money already spent. The chapter invites a closer look at activity on the ground, rather than a conclusion based on headlines alone.

Malaysia, your way

Malaysia, your way — chapter artwork from the refreshed Malaysia video

There is no single way to experience Malaysia. The final chapter moves between island waters, rainforest landscapes and city life, with scenes connected to places such as Redang, the Perhentian Islands, Taman Negara and Sabah’s Kinabatangan River. Shopping, indoor activities and outdoor adventure add further contrasts to the picture.

You do not have to be planning a trip to enjoy the journey. For anyone curious about Malaysia, these scenes provide a window into its variety; for those who know it well, they may suggest something still to discover. The film closes with an invitation to keep looking, learning and forming your own view.
